Boosting CVR & revenue of advertorial through UX/UI enhancement

  • Project Timeline: 3 months

  • My Role: UX Strategist, UX Researcher, UX Designer, and Front-End Developer

  • Team: Product Designer

  • Tools: SurveyMonkey, Figma, and Optimizely

Background

SmartAsset, the largest marketplace connecting consumers with financial advisors nationwide, designed its matching experience around three key stages: pre-match, match, and post-match. However, the pre-match stage, which relied on advertorials and marketing campaigns, experienced significant and consistent consumer drop-off, signaling a critical need for improvement.

Goal: Increase conversion rate (CVR) by enhancing the UX/UI of the marketing advertorials

Research & Design Process

A feedback loop was established to identify any pain points and product opportunity areas throughout all three stages of the consumer experience:

  • CSAT Surveys: Assessed user satisfaction across key journey stages.

  • Expert UX/UI Reviews: Highlighted design inconsistencies and technical flaws.

  • Analytics Deep Dive: Uncovered a high proportion of mobile users and low levels of engagement in pre-match stage.

Key Findings

The UX/UI review validated the below findings and identified additional areas of potential improvement (see annotations):

  • Inconsistent Branding: Users perceived a disconnect between the pre-match and match phases.

  • Misaligned Expectations: Consumers were unclear about next steps, often expecting a "score" at the end of the questionnaire.

  • Suboptimal Mobile Experience: Analytics revealed that most users accessed the funnel via mobile, yet the pre-match phase was not optimized for small screens.

Design Approach

Based on the learnings and insights from research, the Product Designer and I took a mobile-first approach and focused on optimizing the following areas of the experience:

  • Enhanced UX/UI: Improved readability and scannability by restructuring content and adhering to the 8-point grid system.

  • Consistent Branding: Standardized color schemes, iconography, and typography per SmartAsset’s design guidelines.

  • Expectation Management: Introduced clear messaging throughout the content outlining SmartAsset’s matching service.

Outcomes

Once the design concept was completed, I translated the designs into front-end code and conducted an A/B test against the original template using Optimizely. The test revealed positive trends in both CVR and lead quality, leading to the following outcomes:

  • Improved CVR & Lead Quality: The new concept generated a 22% increase in CVR and showed improvements to lead quality down-funnel.

  • Revenue Growth: The revamped pre-match design contributed to over $225,000 in additional monthly revenue.

  • New CRO Team: The project's success led to the formation of a dedicated team to explore additional advertorial optimizations.

Learnings

  • Foundational Principles Matter: Even incremental improvements based on UX/UI best practices can create significant business impact.

  • Rapid Iteration Drives Results: Quick prototyping and testing informed the product roadmap and unlocked new opportunities for innovation.
